  Connecting Brains and Society
The present and future of brain science:
what is possible, what is desirable?

  European Workshop, 22 and 23 April 2004,
  Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Proceedings and Synthesis report
“Brain sciences not only cover the treatment of neurological disease, but also constitute an important narrative about what it is to be human. That is why a societaldiscussion on developments in this field is important". This was the plea of Danish medical anthropologist Andreas Roepstorff at the end of the international workshop Connecting Brains and Society (Amsterdam, April 2004).
The discussions concerned the far-reaching scientific and social consequences of the brain sciences. All formal sessions, including the plenary discussions, were recorded and edited for this book by the three science journalists – Marjan Slob, Karin Rondia and Peter Raeymaekers - who also mediated the workshop.
The second part of this book contains a summary of all the social issues raised by the brain sciences, taking them up in a more systematic way and in greater detail.

Both the workshop and the book are a collaborative initiative of the Rathenau Institute and the King Baudouin Foundation.

Newsletter 'Meeting of Minds, One Year On'

Who would have thought that Meeting of Minds could make such waves - compelling officials, ethical committees and scientists to take notice; strengthening democracy by inspiring further deliberations; and boosting the fledgling movement for citizens to take more control of the research agenda?

Publication of the newsletter 'Meeting of Minds, One Year On' coincides with Brain Awareness Week 2007. In the newsletter the King Baudouin Foundation reports on a busy year. On behalf of its partner consortium it describes all that has been done to disseminate the results of Meeting of Minds and to ensure that the citizens' recommendations are being communicated effectively into the policy process.

Food for Thought and Debate on Brain Science

  Information brochure

Brain science is a hot topic! Scientists are moving ever closer to being able to connect what we experience to certain parts of the brain. For the first time ever, we might actually be able to see what makes us feel, think and act the way we do. These developments raise a number of questions that are very important to everyone. The prospect of artificially repairing a damaged brain gives hope to many people suffering from brain afflictions. But the availability of increasingly sophisticated ways of manipulating the brain gives rise to concerns: Who exactly will make these changes? Why will they make them? And will this process bring about a fundamental change in us as human beings?

This brochure focuses on six aspects of brain science. We meet a mother whose son has ADHD, a student who took pills to improve his exam results and a man who knows that he will develop Alzheimer's disease at some point in the future, but doesn’t know what to do about it. Each topic starts with a realistic example, followed by a short presentation of the facts and an exploration of the societal issues and concerns raised.

Written in an accessible language, this brochure is meant to serve as a starting point for discussions on the impact of brain science.
